New York's The Dying Light have been fusing blackened thrash and death metal since 2005, building on the state's long extreme metal tradition with a sound that's as riff-driven as it is atmospherically vicious. Two decades of activity has given them time to refine the precise balance of aggression and darkness that defines blackened thrash at its best — the speed and spite of thrash locked inside death metal's sonic murk. They are one of New York's more enduring underground extreme metal acts.
Ellenville · 2014–present · active
Out of Ellenville in New York's Hudson Valley, The Gods Themselves formed in 2014 as a three-way collision of death, black, and thrash metal — a combination they wear with an aggressive, unpolished intensity rather than the clinical precision that genre-blending can sometimes produce. The name, borrowed from the Asimov novel, hints at ambitions beyond the regional underground they emerged from. Their sound pulls in multiple directions at once without ever feeling like a compromise between them.
· 2016–present · active
New York black metal duo formed in 2016 by Frank Fisicaro and Sean Gabler, who named the project after Peter Cushing's ominous character in the 1974 Amicus horror anthology From Beyond the Grave. Their debut full-length For Nothing is my Own draws on atmospheric and traditional black metal while keeping one foot in the horror-obsessed cultural tradition that has long defined the genre's American underground.
· 2018–present · active
A New York black/death metal project formed in 2018, The True Goat channels raw, ritualistic aggression with an underground ethos that favors darkness over accessibility. Their approach leans into the primitive, confrontational side of extreme metal with little concession to polish.
Buffalo · 2012–present · active
Buffalo's Theatre Nocturne have been fusing black and death metal since 2012, with the geographical atmosphere of western New York's gray winters lending a fittingly bleak quality to their sound. Their blend sits in the aggressive intersection of the two genres rather than favoring either in isolation.
Buffalo · 2013–present · active
Buffalo, New York's This Eternal Cold occupy the brutal overlap between black metal's corrosive atmosphere and deathcore's bone-crushing breakdowns, a combination as bleak as the city's winters.
Brooklyn, New York City · 2013–present · active
Brooklyn's Throaat have been one of New York City's more ferocious underground exports since 2013, mashing speed, thrash, and black metal into a filthy, relentless hybrid that strips away any pretension in favor of raw, primordial attack.
Syracuse · 2025–present · active
Syracuse's Time Under Earth formed in 2025 with a progressive black metal orientation — bringing the compositional complexity and structural ambition of prog to black metal's tremolo-picked ferocity and atmospheric extremity. As a very new act, they represent the leading edge of upstate New York's experimental extreme metal.
Brooklyn, New York City · 2009–present · active
Brooklyn's Tombs are one of the most distinctive voices to emerge from the New York underground, layering post-metal's expansive atmosphere over black metal's bleakness since 2009 to create dense, emotionally charged records that transcend both genres.
